Lagos appoints new judges

Four new judges were on Friday sworn in by the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, to join the existing 50 in the state’s High Court.

The new judges are Justices Iyabo Akinkugbe, Serifat Sonaike, Abisoye Bashua and Abdulfattah Lawal.

At the swearing-in ceremony held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in Alausa, Fashola charged the new judges to be fearless in the discharge of their duty.

The governor, who noted that only five out of the seven names submitted to the National Judicial Council were approved, urged the new judges to always remember that their new position was a sensitive one.

Fashola, who said that his government had put in place an enabling environment and all necessary infrastructures, including regular power supply, asked the new judges to keep themselves updated in order to give their best.

Fashola said, “You need to be knowledgeable and familiar with business development all over the world in order to ensure justice.”

Earlier in her remarks, the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Funmilayo Atilade, stated that the appointment of the new judges came after they were adjudged as suitably qualified.

Welcoming them on board, the CJ charged them to be disciplined, focused, incorruptible, diligent and committed to their duties.

Responding on behalf of the other new judges, Justice Akinkugbe pledged that the new judges would discharge their duties with full sense of responsibility and dignity.

The new judges thanked Fashola and the CJ for the faith and confidence reposed in them.
