A heavily armed 30-man gang yesterday attacked Ifaki Ekiti Police Station, indiscriminately shooting  before robbing an old  generation bank   in the town .
The robbers,  according to the Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti State Police Command, Mr Victor Babayemi, came into town via motorbikes and shot into the air in a manner that created panic, where a bank official was said to have been wounded and taken to the hospital for treatment
An eyewitness revealed to newsmen that the bandits had  riddled the Station with bullets,  gained entry into the bank hall and  carted away  undisclosed amount of money in the operation.
The incident, which occurred at about 11.30am , had disrupted commercial activities for close to two hours, as traders hurriedly closed their shops and stayed indoors.
The development forced banks operating in the State Capital to close shop as early as 12.noon , probably in compliance with the security alert sent out  from the Command’s headquarters to them when such situation arises.
The source said  the men of the underworld had targeted the bank located close to the Police station , but had to attack the station first to demobilise the policemen on ground,  in order to have a field day.
The source added that nobody was killed in spite of the attack  on the Station and indiscriminate firing of gunshots by the bandits.
The source said motorists coming from Ido Ekiti , particularly commercial drivers had to make   a detour  and diverted to Osi-Awo road , while those coming into Ado Ekiti via Oye-Ifaki road, had to turn back,  to prevent being caught in the web of gunfire.
Explaining further,  Babayemi  said his men had repelled the robbers’ attempt  to overrun the Station and stopped  them from carting away money in the bank contrary to rumour in town.
He said: “The Commissioner of Police, Mr Taiwo Lakanu quickly drafted his men to the town , who engaged the robbers in gun duel  and botched the operation.
"Though they wanted to overrun the station but we repelled them.
“When they knew that we were gaining upper hand, because we succeeded in putting them in disarray, they fled into the bush and as I am talking to you, our men are on their trail.
“They can only rob in the rural area because of the tight security network we have on ground in Ado Ekiti. So, banks in Ado Ekiti can operate without fear”. Babayemi said.
